As a London family photographer it is important to learn and improve all the time in order to be able to offer families the best outdoor sessions. With this in mind, I attended a Colour and Light Outdoor Photography Workshop by top family photographer Nina Mace in May 2016. Nina Mace is an award winning photographer and has won many prestigious awards including family portrait photographer of the year.
The workshop was held in the beautiful surroundings of Kensington Gardens. There were 7 other photographers attending the workshop. Luckily for us, the rain stayed away and we had a wonderful afternoon and evening photographing some fantastic models. The models were very cute and very easy to photograph. They were not at all camera shy which made our jobs that much easier. Nina gave us tips on posing, the best light to use and the best time of day to photograph and various other techniques. The workshop was very informative yet fun at the same time.
One of the most obvious things I learnt during the workshop, was that time of day has such a huge impact on the quality of light and the resultant photographs. The first models arrived at about 15:00. The light was bright and harsh at this time of day so location was paramount in order to get decent photos. As the sun dipped and the quality of light improved, so many more options became available in terms of locations. The light was lovely and golden and far more flattering. The best time of day for photographs is early morning when the sun is still low and late evening when the sun has started to dip down. Obviously not all families can have their sessions at this time, but if you can be flexible with your routine for one day you will not be sorry – your photos will be that much better if you are willing to keep the kids up a little later!
